Black Hawk Bridge is named after Chief Black Hawk, and is one of the more unusual bridges over the Mississippi River. It is a Cantilever bridge. Cantilevers are the structures shooting out horizontally from the bridge, and allow for the suspension to happen between the anchor points on either side.

This photo was taken in 1956, and the bridge was actually closed at this time. It was originally a privatized bridge owned by the Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge Company. However, it was damaged from ice damming and closed between 1945 and 1957. Its owners lacked the necessary capital to repair the bridge, and it was absorbed by Iowa and Wisconsin and eventually fixed for public use.
