There are plenty of great trails in Iowa, and we couldn’t pick the best one if we tried. But in the running would definitely be a trail in Pikes Peak State Park that’s short and sweet (around one mile) but still features an impressive five points of interest. Plus, it’s accessible (and beautiful) in any season. Yes, this is definitely one for the bucket list!
The Bridal Veil Trail in Pikes Peak State Park near McGregor, Iowa leads to the beautiful Bridal Veil Waterfall.
The falls aren’t huge, especially after prolonged dry periods, but the water has gracefully shaped the rock and cut underneath to leave a crescent shaped ledge over which the water tumbles.
The trail is very developed with a boardwalk and over 200 stair steps to reach the falls. The Bridal Veil trail is just one of a number of trails you can hike on here at Pikes Peak State Park, so it's easy to pick a trail to extend your hike if you’ve seen just enough to whet your appetite by the time you reach the falls.
Three can be accessed on the Bridal Veil Trail and one other is accessed via the East Hickory Ridge trail. The final is accessed from the Deer Ridge Trail on the very southern edge of the park.
There is a Native American “Effigy” mound in the shape of a bear just north of the main overlook along the Bridal Veil Trail. The ancient mound was made between 800 to 1200 AD.
For a longer hike the Weeping Rock Trail heads north toward the Homestead Parking Area and a host of additional trails. There is even a concession stand selling refreshments and souvenirs at the parking area closest to the Bridal Veil Falls. The store is open from Memorial Day through mid-October.
Peaceful in the winter and gorgeous in the fall, this is a great place to unwind and be refreshed. Soak in the surroundings for an hour or all day; you won’t regret a minute of it. And while you’re in the area, don’t miss the nearby Effigy Mounds National Monument.
