Iowa has some simply fantastic hidden treasures when it comes to things to do. And we aren’t just talking about things to do in the big cities. We’re talking about small towns, too… like Keosauqua!
With a farm name like Bloom and Bark, it’s not immediately apparent exactly what the unique opportunity and craft that can be experienced in this rural Keosauqua locale is.
That’s cool enough in its own right, especially since you can watch artists at their craft. It gets better even than that, though, because not only can you see a master at work, you can actually participate in this ancient art!
The farm offers a variety of glass-blowing classes ranging in price from $28 to $90 that don’t require previous experience and are suitable for many ages.
Take the most basic class and you can create an ornament with assistance. Take the Glass Blowing Basics class and you will get two full hours of one on one time with the instructor to create your very own blown glass.
Glass blowing has been around for a while (like over 3,500 years) and is mesmerizing to behold. Watch sand turn to thick liquid in a sweltering hot furnace and then emerge as a glowing orange ball of immense potential.
There are a few things you should know if you plan to take classes. They are by appointment only, and due to the hot materials being handled, Bloom and Bark has shoe and clothing requirements listed on their website.
Also it takes at least 24 hours to slowly cool down a piece, which means you either need to come back again later to pick it up (maybe you want an excuse anyway!) or have Bloom and Bark ship the piece to you.
Finally, don’t miss various events held throughout the year to bring together local artists and which may quite possibly include oven-fired pizza or delicious bread here on this one-of-a-kind Iowa farm.
