Nestled in a residential area of Pella, Iowa, Big Rock Park is an unexpected eighty-three-acre oasis of nature in town. It is home to deer, owls, and a plethora of other birds, and the mature stand of native Iowa trees creates a beautiful canopy over the hiking trails. While there will occasionally be another car in the parking lot when you arrive, it’s never crowded. Instead, it’s a place to unwind and soak up nature whether you’re walking a furry friend, cross-country skiing, exploring over two miles of trails, or simply enjoying a shady bench. 

The park’s namesake, a giant boulder, is located less than a quarter of a mile from the parking lot up the trail marked by red squares.

This big rock protrudes over 6 feet above the ground, and researchers estimate that it extends another 14 feet underground, a number that is gradually increasing as the boulder is slowly sinking.

This rock is worn smooth on some faces from years of young hikers climbing up it and sliding back down.

Another kid favorite is the sandbar located just downstream of where the cement bridge crosses the creek to the north of the parking lot. Sand, rocks, and the shallow stream combine for hours of fun.

In the early spring, the woods in Big Rock Park are sprinkled with delicate ephemeral flowers, and soon, unique mushrooms appear. It’s a great place to enjoy fall colors and to snowshoe in the winter, making it a year-round destination.

There are signs along the trails identifying some of the many native Iowa tree species and giving details about their characteristics and use.

You might also notice the owl nesting boxes hung high in trees throughout the park. It’s rare to hike the trails without hearing at least one owl hooting, especially in the evening.

While the park does not have bathroom facilities, there is a picnic shelter and a small disc golf course near the parking area. The trees make it a fun course for those up for a challenge!
