All in all, Iowa is a great place to live. But like any other place, there are a some things here you’ll want to steer clear of. Whether you live in Iowa, are thinking of moving here, or are just planning a visit, these are the things you should avoid if at all possible.
1. Going out in the summer without sunscreen.
You will inevitably end up with a farmer's tan.
2. Going out in the winter without gloves.
You will instantly regret it. You don't know how nice fingers are to have until yours are too frozen to move.
3. Going hiking in the fall without wearing bright clothing.
You're likely to be mistaken for a deer...and that would make for a REALLY bad day.
4. Going for a backroads drive across the Iowa countryside without filling up first.
There are spots in Iowa where you can drive for miles and miles without seeing another person, and gas stations can be few and far between.
5. Going to the Iowa State Fair when you're on a diet.
Because it's impossible to say no to a fried Snickers.
6. Driving too fast on gravel.
This is a life lesson we Iowans learn early.
7. Or driving on wet gravel.
This is even worse - avoid it at all costs!
8. Letting your tires go bald.
Bad tread means it's even worse when you have to drive on ice and snow. Get out a penny and check those treads!
9. Driving in the winter.
When it snows, people just forget how to drive. If you can avoid being out during this, please do.
10. Getting caught without a tornado plan.
People may enjoy watching the storm, but it's important to know when to call it quits and head to safety. Have a safe place to ride out the storm - and a few emergency supplies are always a good idea, too.
11. Getting stuck behind slow moving farm equipment.
There's nothing worse than driving on the highway, and then having to slow down for a line of cars going 25 mph because they're stuck behind a piece of farm equipment. Hope you're not in a hurry!
12. Buying into the stereotype that Iowa is boring.
We have so much more to offer than most people expect. Whether you call this place to home, or are just passing through, there's no reason to ever be bored in Iowa.
What do you think, Iowa? What are some other things people in our lovely state should stay away from if they can?
