Have you heard of the tiny river town of Bentonsport, Iowa? It’s a veritable treasure trove of history and well worth a visit, including, if you can manage it, the out-of-the-way little museum hidden here known as the Indian Artifact Museum.
Now, right upfront, you should know that this little museum isn't the easiest spot to tour. It's a bit hard to find, as it's mislabeled on certain online maps. The true location is just up the road from 21929 Des Moines Street in Bentonsport.
Even if you do track down the right location for the Indian Artifact Museum, it's not always open. The most reliable time to visit is anytime on Saturdays or on Sunday afternoons. Otherwise, the museum is open when the owner is home and closed when he isn't.
All of these artifacts are from a 60-mile radius of the museum. They include several extra unique tools and charms, and the entire collection of thousands of artifacts is in pristine condition.
Admission to the museum is free, but donations are encouraged.
To learn more, visit the museum’s website courtesy of the Greef General Store, and pay them a visit as well when you’re in the area! Greef’s is just up the street. And if you love Iowa history, here are 15 more historical landmarks to visit when you get the chance.
