- Dubuque: Founded in 1833, this is Iowa's oldest community, and it houses the only Iowa courthouse with a gold-leaf dome. Before it was formerly settled, its caretakers were members of the Indian tribe the Meskwakie Nation, Iowa's only federally recognized Indian tribe. The town is named after the first settler and a friend of the tribe, French-Canadian fur trader Julien Dubuque. Now more than 350 buildings in the town have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Imagine what a field trip here might uncover.
