City-wide garage sale weekends are a normal part of summer life here in Iowa. Did you know there is actually a 100-Mile yard sale going right through Iowa each year? The Iowa Highway 141 Garage Sale is an annual event and this year it’s planned for Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4. Mark your calendars. Here are the details:
Highway 141 in Iowa starts at Interstate 29 near Sloan. It ends at the interchange with Interstate 80 and Interstate 35.
Highway 141 is also the shortest route between Sioux City and Des Moines. Many travelers bypass Highway 141 in favor of a slightly longer route, and higher speed limit, via Interstates 29, 680, and 80. The Highway 141 Garage Sale event keeps travelers off of the Interstate. You won't want to miss a single mile of this epic event.
In addition to countless garage sales, you'll see retail vendors, massive flea markets, and concessions.
People from neighboring communities often bring their sales on the road, setting up in parks and along the roadside.
Sales typically begin at 8am. Ending times are on a sale-by-sale basis.
As with all garage sale-ing, arriving as close to opening time is the best way to score amazing deals. With a total of over 177 miles of bargains, it's impossible to see it all.
Nearly 20 communities along Highway 141 between Des Moines and Mapleton participate in this giant yard sale each year.
You'll find bargains galore in Mapleton, Ute, Charter Oak, Denison, Manilla, Manning, Templeton, Coon Rapids, Bayard, Bagley, Jamaica, Dawson, Perry, Bouton, Woodward, Granger & Grimes, Smithland - Hornick, and Sloan.
Each town typically produces their own map of sales to help you find the homes and various locations of participants.
Even if you don't get a map of each town you visit, it'll be easy to find the sales. Just watch for the signs!
Planning to spend both Friday and Saturday at the 141 Garage Sales? If you need lodging, you'll be pleased to know that there are over 15 hotels right along the route.
After a few hours of bargain hunting, you'll probably get hungry.
Luckily, there are concessions available all along the route. Churches, various civic organizations, and even a few Scout troops feed hungry shoppers to raise funds.
Residents of participating communities should contact their individual town's Highway 151 Sale representatives to find out how to register as an official participate.
Registering with your town allows your location to be placed on the town sale map. If you live in a town along the route that does not currently participate and you'd like to learn how to get involved, contact Sharon Prince of The Highway 141 Association at 3320 110th Street, Jamaica, Iowa 50128.
