Iowa is a great place to live but, like any state, there are certain essentials you need in order to survive and thrive as an Iowan. So, for those of us lucky enough to already live here, and to anyone planning to visit here soon, here is a list of 10 things that you better have if you want to survive in Iowa.
1. Layering Skills
It is absolutely essential for an Iowan to know how to layer. With our crazy weather, there will definitely be occasions where you can expect to wear a winter jacket in the morning and shorts by noon.
2. A Good Winter Coat
A good winter coat is also a must-have for living in Iowa. Don't try to get away with buying a really light, fashionable winter coat - you will regret it, especially when it when it gets to be below zero. The thicker and more marshmallow-esque the coat, the better.
3. A Pair Of Boots
To live in Iowa, you will need a pair of boots. Whether it's snow boots, rain boots, cowboy boots, or work boots, it doesn't matter. You may think you can survive without them, but soon enough you'll realize your mistake and wish you had gotten a pair.
4. A Shovel
Living in Iowa and not owning a shovel is a futile attempt at denying reality - the snow is still going to come whether you accept it or not, like it does every year. Everyone in Iowa needs a shovel, better yet, multiple shovels.
5. Bug Spray
Good luck trying to survive an Iowa summer without bug spray. If you plan on stepping outside at all, and especially if you plan on camping or hiking or fishing, I highly suggest you bring bug spray if you don't want to be the feast of a thousand hungry mosquitoes, chiggers and ticks.
6. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is just as essential as bug spray for an Iowa summer. Unless you're a fan of the farmers tan, you may want to slather on some sunscreen as you sit out in the hot, Iowa sun during that baseball game.
7. A Vehicle
With so many small, rural communities surrounded by countless miles of farmland, it takes a while to get from point A to point B. With all our cities and towns spaced so far apart, it's near impossible to get around without a car. That doesn't mean it can't be done, but it would certainly be a lot harder, and less people do it.
8. A Copy Of The Movie, "Field Of Dreams"
Probably the most famous movie filmed in Iowa, you should definitely see this at least once. We Iowans are very proud of this movie, and still love to talk about it when the conversation goes in that direction. If you mention to an Iowan that you haven't seen this movie, you can probably expect them to look at you like you just kicked their dog.
9. A Shirt To Show Your Support For Your Team Of Choice
No matter where you live in Iowa, it is absolutely essential that you own a shirt to show your affiliation with one of the teams. Whether you like sports or not, one of these shirts will somehow materialize in your closet, and you will wear it on at least one occasion.
10. A Sense Of Humor
We Iowans get a lot of flack from out-of-staters, but what sets us apart is that we have a sense of humor. We don't get all worked up, because we know how to take a joke, and fire back with a few of our own.
