From haunted inns to spooky corn fields with unknown creatures lurking in them, you can’t deny the creepiness Iowa can have – especially around this time of the year. Today, we get to enjoy (or maybe avoid) all sorts of frightening haunts in Iowa that have given us a reputation for sheer terror in some cases. Here are 10 reasons why we think Iowa is the most terrifying, spookiest state of them all!
1. The seemingly endless corn fields give you an eerie feeling. Just looking at them could make anyone scared of getting lost - and never finding their way back out.
2. Even spookier is the thought of what may be lurking in those corn fields, just waiting for you.
3. If you have ever seen Children of the Corn, you know just how utterly terrifying corn can be, and you'll never go near it at night.
4. And if you've ever seen The Crazies, you'll forever be afraid of pitchforks and other farm equipment.
5. Plus, there's just something sort of eerie and creepy about driving on an empty back road in Iowa. It makes you wonder where all the people are...
6. It's an especially creepy feeling when you stumble upon one of Iowa's forgotten ghost towns, and you wonder why all the people left, or what happened there...
7. But even scarier than the "what if's" are the places that are actually known to be haunted. Like the Mason House Inn, where several ghosts haunt overnight guests, appearing at their bedside to stand over them.
8. Or the haunted Edinburgh Manor, where the ghosts of past patients are said to linger and make themselves known to visitors, most notably "The Joker," a violent spirit known to choke visitors.
9. Another reason is the infamous Villisca ax murder, where an entire family was murdered in their sleep by a stranger - who was never caught. Maybe he's still roaming around, or his evil spirit still haunts the area. I don't think I want to find out...
10. Lastly, and most terrifyingly, is the unsolved mystery of the Visitor of Van Meter.
For several days back in the early 1900's, the entire town of Van Meter was haunted by a creature described to be from the deepest pits of hell. Reportedly, a half man, half animal creature with enormous, greasy, black bat wings terrorized the town. Witnesses say that it smelled more foul than anything they had ever experienced, and it shot a blinding light out of its horned head. Eventually, the townsfolk gathered their weapons and chased the creature into an abandoned mine shaft, where they blocked off the entrance. The creature was never seen again. But for all we know, they mysterious visitor of Van Meter is still lurking in the depths of that abandoned mine shaft, just waiting for someone to stumble upon the entrance and release it to terrorize the town once more...
