There are several rustic cabins available for rent at Loess Hills Hideaway. Open year round, the campground is spread over 38 acres of woodland complete with hiking trails. Fish in Savery Pond, or spend time in nearby Preparation Canyon State Park.
5. Creekside Cottage, Allamakee County
The perfect destination if you are traveling with people who don’t share your urge to live without Wi-Fi, Creekside Cottage has it all and it’s just off the bank of Paint Creek. This beautiful Amish-built cabin is two miles north of the Yellow River Forest. There are no other homes or cabins within sight. The clear sky is unspoiled by light pollution. The stocked trout stream flows right beside the cabin, so bring your fly fishing gear!
6. 806 River Cabin, Whiterock Conservancy, Coon Rapids
This is a hike-in or bike-in three-season remote cabin with absolutely no running water, electricity, or modern bathroom facilities. If getting back to nature is your goal, this is your ideal location. There is an outhouse and sun-heated shower house. You can bring your dog and horses are welcome, as well.
7. Sustainable living cabins, Fontana Park in Hazelton
These year-round rental cabins have two bedrooms, a private bathroom, small kitchenette, and sleeping accommodations for six. These two cabins run on an off-grid solar power system. There’s a nature center on-site.
8. Sweetwater guesthouse, Fairfield
For off-the-grid luxury, you’ll want to check out this sustainable living paradise. It’s powered by wind and sun, has four bedrooms, and is situated in an eco-village. For those interested in learning more about full-time off-grid living, this relaxing oasis offers an education as well as a vacation.
9. Big Hollow off-grid cabin, Sperry
This two-bedroom cabin has no running water and solar-powered lighting. You can borrow a canoe and enjoy the lake while renting the cabin. Non-drinking water is available via a rain barrel and pump. The cabin sleeps five and has a maximum allowable capacity of 10. This cabin is only available between April 1 and October 31, but you can make reservations 24 months in advance.
10. River Otter Cabin, Pinicon Ridge Park, Central City
This cabin, located east of the Wapsipinicon River on a wooded bluff offers one room and 350 square feet of living space. There is a primitive restroom close by and a shower facility about a half mile away. There isn’t any indoor water here, but there is a kitchenette, fire ring with a grill outside, and the cabin is heated.
