McCormick’s Creek State Park is one of the most loved state parks in the Midwest. It’s exceptionally beautiful, and the hiking and camping there are second to none. There are ten trails weaving through McCormick’s Creek State Park; each of them is captivating in its own way and well worth a hike someday. Today, though, we’re going to take a closer look at one of the more underrated trails at the park: Wolf Cave Trail, otherwise known as Trail 5, is an absolutely great hiking trail in Indiana – one that’s easy to fall in love with!
You'll begin your journey at the Wolf Cave parking area.
It's a relatively small lot, with only about 20 parking spaces, so arriving early is imperative. From the lot, you'll meander into Wolf Cave Nature Preserve.
It's a breathtaking place, with so many photogenic sights to see that even the most experienced photographers might feel overwhelmed.
...and, perhaps best of all, you'll come across a cave. It's the Wolf Cave for which the trail is named, and it was formed by many millennia of underground water flows eroding the limestone. Eventually, the cave was exposed, though now it's dry - all the water that once occupied it is now much further underground.
It's open year-round, and every season brings with it a special magic you won't experience anywhere else. Come in the summer for lush greenery, come in autumn for the incredible color, explore in winter to experience an incredible wonderland, or come in spring to watch new life spring from the snow.
It's not terribly long; it's just two miles total, and you'll end up where you started - back at the parking lot.
Though the trail is a brief couple of miles, it can get moderately challenging at certain points. Make sure to bring plenty of drinking water and take breaks when you need to - you can't see all the amazingness if you become exhausted!
Your furry BFF is welcome on the trail, too, as long as they're on a leash.
Trail 5 at Wolf Cave is a simple (but not 100% 'easy') trek through some of the most incredible scenery in all of Indiana. The entire state is beautiful, of course, but there's just something about the scenery at McCormick's Creek State Park - and in particular Trail 5 - that relaxes the soul.
This trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and running.
When you arrive at McCormick’s Creek State Park, look for the Wolf Cave parking area. From there, it’s easy to follow the trail. This great hiking trail in Indiana is truly a treat for the eyes and the spirit, and we have no doubt it will become one of your favorites very quickly.
