Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Indiana is home to quite literally hundreds – if not more – of species of birds. Among all those avian friends of ours, the tiny hummingbird seems to command big respect for such a little creature. But, come on – who wouldn’t be enchanted by something so beautiful (and cute) but powerful (those little wings beat 10-15 times per second; try beating that with push-ups)? I know I am – and apparently, we’re not alone; on August 5th, 2023, you’ll want to head over to the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary in Connersville for the best little hummingbird festival in Indiana.
The Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary is intensely beautiful and truly worth a visit at least once during every season.
At the festival, you'll learn all about hummingbirds, their lives and habits, and so much more. You'll leave a regular hummingbird expert! Fun fact: did you know a group of hummingbirds is called a charm? Yep - and this event is nothing short of charming.
...okay, I'll leave. But first:

There will be demonstrations in which you can view gorgeous hummingbirds up close - an opportunity very rarely had in the wild.
Take a guided nature walk (or ten), and then come back for demonstrations featuring live birds of prey (not related to hummingbirds, but REALLY COOL and absolutely worth watching).
Discover the secrets to attracting hummingbirds to your yard, the dos and don'ts of hummingbird feeders, such as cleaning and frequency of nectar changes (as well as just what kind of nectar is best).
Additional things to expect are vendor booths, fun stuff for the kids, live music, food, drinks, and lots more. Bring an appetite for learning AND for tasty local food vendors.
As I mentioned above, there are several guided nature walks to attend, so don't stop at just one!
There's one at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, and so on. Hikes go on all day from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., which is the final hike of the afternoon. Each hike has a different theme, so you never do the same one twice.
Under the large shelter, there are family activities like beeswax candle making, hummingbird face masks for the kiddos, and other delights.
This festival is a blast from top to bottom, with a wonderful day in store for everyone who attends.
The Hummingbird Migration Celebration takes place on August 5th, 2023, and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the festival, as well as your tickets, be sure to visit the official Eventbrite listing.
