Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
It all started in 1992 when two brothers began selling fresh produce out of their truck with a dream: one day, they would have their very own grocery store. And one day, they most certainly achieved this dream… and then some! In 1994, the first iteration of Saraga was born – and at the time, nobody realized just how awesome and enormous an endeavor it would become. Unable to help but notice the amazing diversity of Bloomington and the world around it, the brothers decided to take an even larger leap, expanding into a 62,000-square-foot building as the single most gigantic international grocery store in Indiana (if not the entire Midwest!).
"Saraga" means living in Korean, and its stated mission is "To provide food and goods necessary for peoples' lives."
It most certainly lives up to its own hype; there's almost nothing from anywhere you won't find within these walls.
With a sprawling produce section, a deli, a meat counter (and a Halal/Kosher meat counter as well), and so much more, Saraga International Grocery Store is a force to be reckoned with.
The staff is kind, dedicated, and knowledgeable. You'll find all sorts of foods and fixin's from numerous cultures and backgrounds, like African, Central and South American, North American, Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, Mediterranean, European, and SO much more. It really, truly is like a trip around the world all in one building.
Trust us, it's amazing. It's what initially attracted us to this place to begin with!
But, we digress: come for the impressive array of grocery options, stay for the fascinating adventure it is to discover new foods and snacks from places far away from here.
Part of appreciating our cultural diversity here in the Hoosier State is by celebrating it - and what better way to do this than to share beloved foods and traditions with others?
A visit to Saraga International Grocery Store is not unlike a visit to somewhere far away.
It's home to sights and scents you don't usually come across simply wandering around Indiana; it brings us all together in a language all of us understand: food.
For a complete list of all the different cuisines and cultures offered up at Saraga, as well as all the latest deals and bargains, be sure to visit the official Saraga International Grocery Store website.
