There’s a lot to see in Indiana and tons of touristy attractions to visit. But, if you want your Indiana trip to be a little more exciting, a little off the beaten path, and a bit more authentic, here are some touristy places and events you should skip and what you should do in their place.
(Disclaimer: All of these places are really awesome, but these are tips for people looking for touristy attractions with less crowds.)

Look, I love zoos, but if you want to have a truly unique experience with wildlife, you have to visit the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Center Point, Indiana. They have over 200 rescued felines on their premises and they offer up close walking tours of the rescue grounds for less than admission to a zoo.

Harry and Izzy had a 50/50 partnership in the famous St. Elmo's Steakhouse, and Harry & Izzy's is a testament to these two friends. With the same shrimp cocktail and steaks that you'll find at St. Elmo's, you'll be treated to a slightly more updated and modern dining experience, and save a few bucks by eating here.

Bloomington, Indiana is an awesome college town, but also has great restaurants, comedy clubs, music venues, and other attractions. If you've been to Indy before or would rather experience a small city for less money, go for Bloomington, instead.

Don't get me wrong, the Pacers, college basketball, and other major sports teams in Indiana are amazing, but why not check out a slightly different sport. Save money and support the city's local derby girls!

Don't misunderstand; the Indianapolis Museum of Art is fantastic, but the lesser known Hall of Heroes in Elkhart is pretty awesome and underrated. If you love superheroes, check this place out instead.

If your family is looking for fun in the sun, skip the expensive food and entry fees at Holiday World for a trip to the Indiana Dunes beachfront instead. Holiday World is amazing, especially for little kids, but if you want to save some cash, try the dunes.
