Luckily for those of us in the Hoosier State, there are plenty of interesting, educational, and otherwise unique destinations perfect for planning a day trip around. Let’s take a look at a small (population <40,000 people) town in Indiana that might just be the most historically rich town in the state, if not the entire Midwest! Vincennes is a small historical town in Indiana worth visiting for the day. Come for the history, stay for the scenery!
Vincennes was founded in 1732 by French fur traders, and it's the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Indiana.
The population, though still small, has been steadily growing over the last decade, and it's easy to see why: it's a scenic and interesting place, especially if you're someone who is fascinated by local and state history.
Vincennes is in Knox County and filled top to bottom with interesting things to do and see.
For those who are interested in the history of the area, we recommend taking a tour of George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, which is home to the largest national monument outside of Washington D.C. Some of the history of the folks from the area is a little more... well... colorful than in other parts of the state, like the above historical marker.
Some people say Vincennes is also one of the most haunted towns in the Hoosier State, and we wouldn't be at all surprised. With lots of history come lots of ghosts, usually.
Other attractions you'll want to check out include the array of Vincennes State Historic Sites and some of the old churches and mansions in town.
You can plan for a cozy stay in any one of the legendary Airbnbs and beds and breakfasts peppered throughout the region. Stay in town or go out into the country under the stars; no matter what you decide you'd like to do, you're sure to find it immensely calming and memorable.
