Most of us could never imagine leaving the humble state of Indiana. Yet many Hoosiers have to depart for important reasons – new job opportunities, school, or family engagements. If you’ve ever lived outside of Indiana, these are 8 things you’re going to sorely miss…
1. We have the best food
If you've left Indiana for a while, you probably began missing some of your favorite food items, from our delicious tenderloins to our decadent sugar cream pies. There's a lot of food to love in the Hoosier state and other states just can't compare.
2. There's nothing quite as beautiful as our rural areas
Most of Indiana is rural and we love our farms and small towns. There's something gorgeous about the wide open Indiana sky hovering over a perfectly golden cornfield. It just feels like home. No matter when you venture off to, you're bound to dream of this heavenly scenery from time to time.
3. We have a small town way of living that's unrivaled
There's something cozy and familiar about all of our small towns and most people who leave miss that sense of comfort. Our small towns are also full of character, history, and plenty of quirks, with lovely places like Nashville, Metamora, Richmond, and New Harmony (to name a few). They don't make them like this anywhere else!
4. The Indianapolis 500
Whether you loved it or just barely put up with it, the Indy 500 is the biggest day in Indiana - and you're definitely going to wish you could be there once it's no longer a short drive away. Plus, this sporting event is the largest one-day event in the country, making it super special to be a part of.
5. We have amazing state and local parks
There's a reason Leslie Knope worked for the Indiana Department of Parks and Recreation. Our parks are incredible and no two look the same. They're pretty hard to give up! From the sandy, jaw dropping Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore all the way down to the rocky, waterfall-lined Clifty Falls, our parks make a lasting impression.
6. The good times at Holiday World
What other state has a completely holiday-themed amusement park where you can celebrate all of your favorite holidays in one day? No state, that's who. On top of that, Holiday World also has an awesome waterpark attached to it, is located in Santa Claus, Indiana, and gives you free soda! You likely remember school trips, summer adventures, and plenty of family times at this Indiana staple.
7. Our unique cities
From Indianapolis to Fort Wayne to South Bend and Bloomington, our cities are pretty unique. Why? They have an awesome small town feel in an urban setting that you just can't get anywhere else. Even our cities take it slow and remember what's important in life, a value we pride ourselves on in the Hoosier state.
8. This epic state fair
When it comes to state fairs, we all no that no one tops the food, fun, and excitement at the Indiana State Fair. You'll be pretty bummed to be missing out on this annual good time (plus, where else will you find deep fried girl scout cookies?).
