The recipe for this sugar cream pie dates back to the early 1800s around the time Indiana officially became a state, which is fitting for this proper pie.
It is believed to have come from the Shaker/Amish communities as a recipe to use when the apple bins were empty. Amish communities in other states have recorded using this recipe as well.
Sugar cream pie is also known as Depression Pie due to the simple ingredients. It takes just milk, sugar, vanilla, and butter to create the filling for this pie.
Most of these ingredients are already in the average person's cabinet. If you don't have a pie crust, the only additional ingredients you need to make one is flour, salt, and Crisco.
If you're not in the mood for making your own, there are plenty of places around the state to find a premade one. Mrs. Wick's is known as the more famous place in the state to get Indiana's official state pie.
If you've never had it, this pie is described as the gooey filling of a pecan pie without the pecans. The filling is dense and sweet while also being a bit jiggly, making for a heavenly texture.
