As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
If you, like us, are always on the lookout for fascinating and unusual places to rest your head at night throughout the Hoosier state, you might just want to take a look at this century-plus-old, maybe-definitely-totally-haunted home from the mid-1800s. Anyone on the search for a haunted place to stay in Indiana would be honored to stay here; we’re pretty sure there’s no way any paranormal activity enthusiast won’t absolutely have to book a night or two.
The Historic McDonald house was built in 1855 by James D. McDonald.
He was a man with big dreams and a lot of ideas; over the decades, he was an entrepreneur, a businessman, a farmer, and more. The 4,800-square-foot mansion was a testament to his personal successes.
Today, the three-story building is now a wildly popular (and pretty creepy) Airbnb, where you can choose between renting just a room or two or getting the entire property all to yourself.
It's got six fireplaces and two staircases; there used to be a third staircase that went all the way up to a crow's nest on the roof, though that's no longer a part of the building. Imagine how cool it would have been to look over the town of Attica from the roof of this Gothic Revival home, though!

But there's something else about the Historic McDonald Airbnb that tends to draw people in, and it's not the architecture.
Supposedly, the Historic McDonald mansion in Attica has been one of the state's most haunted places for decades. Possible connections with the underground railroad of the 1850s combined with the suicide of a previous owner have come together to create a spooky cocktail that's nothing short of thrilling.
Numerous EVP recordings have been captured at the mansion.
An EVP recording, for those not up to date on ghost-hunting and metaphysical lingo, is an audio recording of a spirit's voice (supposedly). The McDonald Airbnb was, at one time, a hotspot for collecting them, and you can likely ask about them. Your hosts will be proud to tell you all about it.
Their pride is understandable; the spirits here don't seem to be negative. In fact, most people report feeling a sense of comfort and peace here.
Visiting mediums have mentioned several times that the ghosts here are protective ones: of the house, the property, and the guests. Their positive intentions, they say, contribute to the positive overall vibe of the place.
Guests can take their pick between renting the entire mansion or individual rooms.
The historic McDonald Airbnb also serves chef-crafted meals upon request, boasts proximity to tons of walking and hiking trails, and even has a work office available for travelers who need access to a laptop and desk. Nearby the mansion are tons of things to do and places to go, including wineries, distilleries, horseback riding, a farmer's market, and so much more. It's truly an entire experience when you stay here.
If you feel like this amazing spot will scratch the itch you have for a spooky, haunted place to stay in Indiana, you should take a look at their website for more information, including how to book your stay and lots more history about the site.
