Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Obviously, the secret is out: Lake Michigan is pretty impressive. Any state lucky enough to have even just a little bit of shoreline along this truly enormous body of (fresh)water is a fortunate state indeed, and Indiana is most definitely one of them. We here at Only In Your State have a certain spellbound fascination with the 45 miles of Lake Michigan’s shoreline that belong to the Hoosier State, and for good reason: this entire stretch is intensely beautiful, and calling part of it ours is a treat like no other. Interestingly, the southernmost point of Lake Michigan lies here, in Indiana, at Marquette Park in Gary. Come see one of the most beautiful places in Indiana!
Gary might be one of those towns that gets a bad rap, but this absolutely does NOT mean it's not worth visiting.
Specifically, you'll want to check out Marquette Park, which is the literal southernmost point of Lake Michigan, and its surrounding areas, like Miller Beach.
There are numerous points along the Indiana coast of Lake Michigan worthy of postcard-perfect photos.
Miller Beach is kind of like if you took all the incredibly photogenic beaches of Lake Michigan and crammed the best of them all into one place. It's scenic, quaint, and a delight to wander around.

Here, you'll find several fascinating natural features that make this area unique.
Discover sand dunes, a lagoon, and even a stunningly beautiful oak savanna (which is something else entirely in the fall). There's plenty to do here, so should you somehow grow bored of Marquette Park or Miller Beach, you still have numerous options.
On one hand, it's nice to have SO many options, but on the other, it can feel overwhelming, too. Allow us to help narrow it down: you cannot go wrong with the southernmost point of Lake Michigan, period.
Attached to Miller Beach is a beautiful lakeside community with plenty of restaurants, shops, and more to fall in love with.
While you're here, you cannot skip a visit to Indiana Dunes National Park, which has the honor of being the Hoosier State's first-ever National Park. If you've never been, we promise you've probably never seen anything so incredible in the Midwest. It is truly an experience not to be missed.
Perhaps better even still, Miller Beach and Marquette Park are just 35 minutes from Chicago, so you could really turn this into an adventure if you have the time!
Need more information? No worries – be sure to visit the official Visit Miller Beach website! Trust us: this is not the crime-ridden Gary, Indiana you hear about in scare stories on the news. This is a stunning region of our amazing state worthy of a bucket list addition.
