When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Indiana is home to more than 20 state parks (24, to be exact), each with its own draw and appeal, and we encourage you to see them all. However, one of those parks, in particular, stands out to us as the best state park in Indiana, both for its breathtaking summertime landscapes and its year-round appeal. Plus, there’s so much to do that maybe one weekend isn’t enough time to explore it all.
Editor’s note: Due to a tornado in March 2023, several hiking trails and the campground are temporarily closed. Please visit the McCormick Creek State Park website for the most current updates.
McCormick's Creek State Park was dedicated on July 4, 1916.
The park is ridiculously beautiful, with scenic spots to admire no matter where you turn. There are more than 10 miles of hiking and walking trails, as well as awesome camping and fishing.
The main draw of the park is definitely the breathtaking waterfalls scattered throughout. Don't underestimate the rest of the park, though - there's so much to see, and you might accidentally spend an entire day at the waterfalls alone!
Why is McCormick's our favorite state park out of the 24 we had to choose from? That vast array of things to do was what did it. You could spend a week here and still not try everything.
Of course, what you choose to do is up to you; whatever helps you relax and unwind the most is exactly what you ought to do with your time at McCormick's Creek State Park.
Other points of interest include the intriguing Wolf Cave, which is along Trail #5. It's a fairly small and easy-to-explore cave at just 82 feet in length, and if you've never seen a cave in person before, this is your perfect chance. It's safe, interesting, and tells plenty of stories about the geology of the region and its history.
You'll come across plenty of critters and new friends, too!
Wolf Cave is a very popular destination for bird watchers and wildlife photographers - you won't want to forget your camera! Encounter plentiful varieties of stunning birds, adorable opossums, majestic deer, and so much more. If you really want to check out the wildlife, we suggest you camp overnight.
...and, speaking of camping, there is plenty to be done at the best state park in Indiana!
The park has numerous campsites that you can reserve, as well as an inn and cabins, too. The campsites range from primitive to more modernized with all the hookups, so, again, the choice is yours. You get to choose your own adventure here!
The park is especially vibrant and teeming with life (and tons of water) following good storms.
After the rain, the waterfalls swell and the wildlife thrives; life-giving water is all it takes to keep this area beautiful. Well, that, and making sure to pack out what you pack in; it's important to leave no trace of your adventures at the park.
For all the information you could ever need about McCormick’s Creek State Park, this website is certainly helpful (and quite thorough).
