There’s a strange architectural phenomenon in Evansville, Indiana that few Hoosiers know about. The University of Evansville’s sesquicentennial oval is much more than a piece of history, and you’ve got to check out what it does.
Leave it to a college to figure out something smart like this. Scroll on for more details.
Founded in 1854 as Moores Hill College, the University of Evansville has a gorgeous campus situated in southern Indiana with much more to offer than academics. Locals love to visit and walk the grounds to admire all its marvelous features.
At the front of the campus, along Lincoln Avenue is a very unique yet little-known attraction that even those who know about it often forget to utilize. Take a stroll from just about any part of the university to the sesquicentennial oval where you'll find a bizarre whispering point.
Around campus, this spot is known as "Echo Point," because if you stand right in the center of that spot, you'll be able to hear your own voice reverberate in your ear. No one believes it until they try it for themselves.
Don't worry. Only you can hear what you're saying. The whole campus can't listen in when you stand at Echo Point. It works due to the way the buildings are positioned on campus, allowing your voice to bounce off of them and right back into your ear drums.
This unique spot is also known as the Clifford Circle. It commemorates the map that was drawn to illustrate that the state did not have any colleges close enough to Evansville in 1919, when Moores Hill was moved to this popular river city and renamed Evansville College.
Once you're satisfied that the sesquicentennial oval is a whispering point, you can roam other portions of the campus. The University of Evansville is well manicured all year long providing a wonderful place for a quick stroll.
The other spot you must check out on campus is the weeping basketball fountain found in the quad. It commemorates the lives of the 29 people, mostly basketball players and coaches for the Aces, who died in a plane crash in 1977.
There is a spoke on the fountain for each life lost and the fountain runs most days when the weather is nice.
Beautiful architecture, tall trees, soft grass, and myriad squirrels and other small critters make this university's campus an adorable little nature walk for you and the kids. Summer is an especially good time to visit as there are fewer students on campus.
If you’ve ever visited this university and its sesquicentennial oval, we’d love to hear from you. Please share your experiences and photos with us below in the comments.
