Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Hidden away in small-town Tell City, Indiana, is a recreation area that’s popular only amongst the locals – most folks from just about anywhere else just don’t even know it’s there. Once you’re aware of it, however, and you’ve visited at least once, you’ll wonder just how you missed out on it for this long; it’s the awe-invoking German Ridge Recreation Area, and it’s home to a challenging secret hiking trail in Indiana fit for only the most avid of hikers. Think you can do it? Challenge accepted: let’s go!
The German Ridge Recreation Area is open 24 hours a day year-round.
Meander your way through some truly beautiful sandstone formations unique to this region, and navigate across some gorgeous, rolling woodland trails that seem like they'll never end along the way.
...as long as you don't mind some rough navigating and bugs (primarily spiders and their webs) aren't an issue for you. Bug spray will help protect you, but do be aware that your hiking poles might just be covered in sticky, white webbing by the time you're finished.
Autumn brings some jaw-dropping colors and less buggy activity, though at night temperatures can begin to dip into the "very chilly" zone.
Finally, winter is the least-popular season, so you'll be able to enjoy an amazing frozen landscape almost all by yourself (if you're into that). It does get quite cold and can be icy, though, so again and as always: prepare ahead of time.
The natural beauty of Indiana is truly jaw-dropping, and I think you'll find German Ridge Trail to be a new favorite (as long as you enjoy the tough ones).
