Some places are truly like something out of a dream. From the moment we set foot there, we’re transported to an amazing, magical world where it’s easy to forget about life for a while and simply be. Indiana just so happens to be full of places like that; as long as you know where to look, you’re sure to find something to enchant you. Indiana has 24 amazing state parks; each was designated as such thanks to its historic value or, in many cases, its unmatched beauty. Some parks get more love than others, and we’d like to highlight one state park that seems to get little attention (but ought to get more). This beautiful hidden gem in Indiana is called Ouabache State Park, and it’s one of those dreamlike places you’ve got to see to believe.
Ouabache State Park is situated right alongside the Wabash River, about 30 miles south of Fort Wayne.
It's definitely one of those state parks that just doesn't get enough love; once someone has been here once, they're hooked, and they'll be back. We think it's your turn!
Once upon a time, this area was known as the Wells County State Forest and Game Preserve, and in 1962 it was rechristened Ouabache State Recreation Area.
There is a wonderful, 20-acre bison exhibit on the grounds, where you can watch a herd of bison go about their daily lives. It's especially fun to watch them when they've got babies with them; if you want to see them as families, you'll want to visit in April and May.
It was even called the "Greatest Wildlife Laboratory in the U.S" for a while. Nowadays, it's just Ouabache - pronounced "wa-bash" like the river or even "o-ba-chee" by those who use the region's Native name.
It's a wonderful, stunning place to visit year-round; there's certainly something to love no matter what time of year you show up.
Should you decide you want to stay (as we said, we definitely recommend it), there are campground reservations and cabin reservations to be made! Be sure to make them in advance, though, to ensure you get the exact spots you want.
This lesser-known, beautiful hidden gem in Indiana is truly a dream come true, and you absolutely need to add it to your bucket list ASAP.
