Lake Monroe is a major hub of activity during the summer. Hoosiers simply love this place, and for excellent reasons: It's clean, scenic, and perfect for a hot, sunny day. Fairfax Beach is a part of the beautiful town of Bloomington, and it's as beautiful as it is fun and refreshing. Visit on a weekday for a much less crowded experience. Lake Monroe is seriously just one of those lakes in Indiana you need to visit at least once.

This beach is private and belongs to the fine fellows at Potawatomi Inn on Lake James. It's a delight for so many reasons: it's chilly all summer long, it's clean, and most of all, it is absolutely pristine. Potawatomi Inn is no slouch, either - it's one of the best places to stay in Indiana, even without the lake access!

The stunning Deam Lake State Recreation Area is a perfect escape for your inner outdoorsy self. The lake is 194 beautiful acres of sparkling, clear water, and this beach often feels like the real deal (well, because it is). Fun fact: Deam Lake was named after the first-ever state forester, Charles Deam. Talk about an amazing legacy!

Michigan City, Indiana, is outrageously scenic and feels much more like an east-coast destination than somewhere landlocked in the Midwest. It's another beach along Lake Michigan's shores, and to say it's "photogenic" is to make the understatement of the century. Best of all, perhaps, is that it's open year-round, and it's astonishingly beautiful year-round, too. Visit in the winter after a deep freeze, and get your mind blown.

Last on this list, but definitely far from least, is Kemil Beach, which is found in the amazing little dark-sky town of Beverly Shores. This one isn't one you'll forget in this lifetime.

Indiana is blessed with many bodies of water that make for recreational fun. Indiana even claims 45 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline as its own. Are some of the biggest lakes in Indiana aside from its partial claim to Lake Michigan:
- Lake Monroe: Monroe Reservoir is considered the biggest lake in Illinois. Sure it is man-made but that doesn't mean the 10,750-acre body of water is any less loved. From boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming, Lake Monroe is a go-to lake for year-round fun in Illinois.
- Patoka Lake: At 8,800 acres, Patoka Lake is Indiana's second-largest reservoir. This wonderful lake in Birdseye, IN is surrounded by nearly 26,000 acres of land that is enjoyed as recreation for us two-legged creatures as well as numerous species of wildlife. The lake itself is well-stocked with fish including walleye, crappie, bluegill, bass, redear, and catfish.
- Gibson Lake: Sitting at position number three in Indiana's list of lakes is actually a cooling pond for Indiana's Duke Energy. At nearly 3,500 acres this "pond" is actually pretty sizable. Because of the cooling function of the lake, the temperature remains above 40 degrees year-round.
- Lake Wawasee: It may not be the biggest lake in Indiana when you include man-made lakes and reservoirs, but Lake Wawasee is the biggest natural lake in Indiana. At a little over 3,400 acres it is still a sizable lake and one of the most popular for recreational activities.
