Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
It wasn’t terribly long ago that Native Americans roamed what is now called Indiana. There are several interesting destinations around the state where you can catch a glimpse of a time and people that once was, but some tend to get more foot traffic than others. The Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest Trail is a lesser-trekked, short, and sweet hike that leads to some intriguing Indian ruins in Indiana from a time long past, and it’s family-friendly, too.
The forest you trek through is 88 beautiful acres of "virgin" (meaning literally untouched by man) forest.
The trees surrounding you are a mixture of ancient walnut, poplar, oak, and ash trees. Some are as large as 50+ inches around, and some are so tall that their lowest branch doesn't begin for up to 60 feet.
The trail is pleasant and quiet; it's one of the more under-appreciated trails in Indiana, and we're not really sure why.
Remember, these ruins are older than any one person or plant on this earth; do not touch, vandalize, or otherwise disturb them. Please allow us to keep them around for generations to come.
The northern boundary of the area is hugged by Lick Creek, and the trail isn't very long (only about one and a half miles), so it's easy to locate.
It's not very often you come across a trail that's short and easy which leads to unbelievable ruins from a time and people long past.
This is probably one of the best of the best when it comes to finding Native American ruins in Indiana. It seems to check all the boxes: beautiful, interesting, and ancient. Even if archaeology isn’t quite your thing, there’s no way you won’t be ultra-fascinated by this peek into the past.
