Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Living in Indiana is a funny thing. It seems like no matter who you are or how long you’ve been here, you’ve probably got a weird (but strangely amusing) love/hate relationship with this place. However, you can always tell if someone’s been here a while – typically, they’ll be able to spot specific things just from photos thanks to being a Hoosier. I’ve gone ahead and collected seven photos that Hoosier should be able to totally get – maybe some of them, maybe all of ’em. We’ll see! Here are seven photos you’ll probably only recognize if you grew up in Indiana:
1. This photo either reminds you of home OR makes you roll your eyes. There is no in-between.
"You're from Indiana? What is there to do there, grow corn? Haha" Yeah, we've all heard it. Fifty million times. But I assure, it's definitely much funnier after the 900th time. Promise. besides, there are plenty of things to do in Indiana that don't involve corn. Duh.
He's a 17-foot-tall, 22-foot-long praying mantis who hangs out next to the road in Kokomo, Indiana. Hoosiers affectionally call him Kokomantis. I call him absolutely awesome.
Did you know there are an amazing 98 covered bridges in Indiana? It's true, and a large percentage of them are in gorgeous Parke County. There's something so photogenic and welcoming about them; we don't know what it is, but we sure appreciate 'em.
Sure, the photo's from a weird angle, but Hoosiers - especially the outdoorsy ones - will be able to recognize it as the strange-and-wonderful Jug Rock. It's one of many unexpected natural wonders in Indiana, and it's definitely a favorite among the locals. It's even the mascot of the high school in Shoals.
5. This license plate - particularly the "Illinois" part - makes you mad.
Ahhh yes: Indiana's official state food! The delicious, juicy, breaded pork tenderloin is everything that's right with Indiana all summed up in one delicious meal. Every Hoosier has been to at least SOMEWHERE that serves up what they call the best tenderloin in Indiana. It's an absolute must for every Hoosier to have a favorite spot.
...well. It's from Indianapolis, not "anywhere", but you get what I'm saying. If you grew up in Indiana, you'd know it even if it were a blacked-out silhouette.
So, what do you think? What would you say are some things only Hoosiers would really “get”? Let me know! If you can’t get enough of all the awesomeness that living in Indiana is, you might want to check out our friends at VRBO – you’ll find some of THE most unique places to stay in Indiana there.
