Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Winter in Indiana is a special time – at least I think so. Sure, the Midwest has this crazy reputation for having over-the-top brutal winters, but that’s… not entirely true. As it turns out, yes, it’s cold – and there’s usually plenty of snow – but this is just PART of what makes Indiana winters what they are. What are they, exactly? Easy – fun, beautiful, and TOTALLY worth enjoying. Take, for instance, Indiana Dunes National Park – a place I love reading and writing about. It’s easily one of the most jaw-droppingly incredible places in the entire Midwest… and in the winter, it transforms entirely.
Indiana Dunes National Park is an absolutely amazing National Park - the only one Indiana's got - nestled right up alongside beautiful Lake Michigan.
Cross-country skiing is a popular winter pastime out here at Indiana Dunes, and it comes as no surprise - the park seems like it was literally designed for such things. From wide, open spaces and gentle hills to dramatic valleys in between towering dunes, you'll find the perfect canvas on which to do your art.
I do have a few favorite trails for winter shenanigans at Indiana Dunes. One such trail is the lesser-known Ly-ko-ki-we Trail, which is just over six miles long and is practically made for this kind of stuff. Love it.
No matter which one you go for and why, you're sure to find a new favorite winter wonderland within Indiana Dunes National Park.
