If you’ve never been to the Big Apple, don’t fret. There’s a New York-style pizza joint in Evansville, Indiana that’s the next best thing. Forget the big city when you can get a giant slice of greasy pizza right here in the Hoosier State.
You don’t have go all the way to the East Coast for this specialty. Scroll on for more details.
Lombardi's New York Pizza and Wings has been in Southern Indiana since 2017. Prior to this, it was located in Henderson, Kentucky, but the draw of the Hoosier State led the owner, Frank, to move his business here.
Frank Lombardi lived in New York for many years before falling in love with the area that is the cusp of the Midwest and the Deep South. Unlike the pizza joints in New York where you have to take your slice to go, this place lets you sit down and enjoy yourself.
While Lombardi's is making New York-style pizza, it's not exactly like the Big Apple — it's better. The soft dough produced on the East Coast could never hold up to the amount of toppings we're used to out here in the middle of the country.
Order traditional toppings or one of Lombardi's specialties. You'll find one topped with roast beef and mashed a potatoes, another with shrimp, lemon, and garlic, as well as one with breakfast toppings like eggs and bacon.
Regardless, you can buy this pizza by the slice or by the pie. You can also order a traditional Sicilian-style pizza, which is square, or calzones. Other popular menu items include homemade eggplant parmigiana, deep-fried crispy rice balls, and 10 different flavors of chicken wings.
Don't forget about dessert! The canoli are to die for.
The best thing about this joint is that just about everything is already made and just about ready to be served. If you order a calzone or pizza by the slice, it will be warmed up in the oven to make it perfectly hot and ready to eat.
