New Harmony was originally settled as Harmony, and established as a commune by German immigrants who came from the town of Harmony in Pennsylvania. The commune town thrived in the early 1820s, but the land was eventually sold to Robert Owen in 1825. Owen then attempt to create a utopian commune society. His vision was realized, but did not last long. Within four years New Harmony also dissolved.
