Tucked away in idyllic southeastern Indiana is a stunningly beautiful small town that’s jam-packed with all the charm in the world. Platted in 1838, it’s one of the older townships in Indiana; as of 2020, the population was just over 200, which it’s maintained for more than a decade now. The town is neither growing nor shrinking, though it enjoys a healthy dose of tourism every year thanks to its attractions and must-sees. If you’re craving adventure in a small town in Indiana, consider Metamora – there’s plenty to love.

Metamora has a very specific charm that most Hoosiers who have been here will be able to pick up on right away. Of all the small towns in Indiana, this one's so distinctive that most folks can tell where it is just by looking at a picture or two.

And wouldn't you know it, "picturesque" is definitely a word that comes to mind while exploring.
Metamora's high level of distinctiveness lends excellently to photography; even amateur photographers (or folks who don't consider themselves photographers at all) can take photos of this town that look like something ripped right out of a painting or a calendar.
The Whitewater Canal is probably its largest claim to fame, and to this day you can take horse-drawn canal boat tours to see the town like you've never seen it before.
And, yes, you did read that right: horse-drawn canal boat tours.
If you can't quite piece together how that works in your head, well, I guess you've just got to come see how it works for yourself. Might as well go on one, too! Trust me, it's worth it - talk about super fun AND informative.
Both the Whitewater Canal District and the Metamora Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with many other spots all over town.
Amazingly, Indiana is home to hundreds - literally hundreds! - of amazing historic places, all of which can be found on the registry. You'll notice that there are a handful of places in Metamora on the list; the town is steeped in as much history as it is beauty.
Come out to Metamora for a day, fall in love, and then maybe make a life out of it.
