Brown County, Indiana, is often considered to be the most beautiful, scenic region of the entire state. Indeed, it’s stunning, and it’s home to one of the most popular state parks around these parts, too. Brown County State Park is a nature lover’s dream come true, and it just so happens that there are a few quaint little towns nearby to explore while you’re at it. One such place is the itty-bitty little township of Helmsburg, a small town in Indiana that’s perfect for nature lovers looking to explore Brown County and all its glory.
Brown County State Park is truly a sight to behold.
It's Indiana's largest park and, as we mentioned, easily its most beautiful.
The nearby town of Helmsburg is adorable and perfectly encapsulates the small-town, mom-and-pop vibe you'd probably expect in a paradise like Brown County.
It's north of Nashville alongside State Road 95. It's small - very small - with a population of fewer than 700 people. What it lacks in size, though, it makes up for in charm.

Despite technically being unincorporated, Helmsburg has a post office of its own, and plenty of cute little shops and galleries.
It's a manifacturing town, and always has been. A fun tidbit of trivia about the place is that it's home to the For Bare Feet sock factory, which makes the socks, headbands, and wristbands worn by NBA players during games. Cool, huh? Who knew tiny-town Indiana had such an important role in one of our favorite pastimes?
Rent a cabin or find the perfect Airbnb to rest your head and get away from it all in beautiful Brown County. Explore the parks, rolling hills, unique geology, and breathtaking forestry of the region while settling down in a quiet place likes Helmsburg.
One of our favorite stays in Helmsburg is this gorgeous cabin built in 1906, which is available on Airbnb.
The leaf-peeping here is second to none, and it's easily one of Indiana's top destinations for checking out incredible fall color year after year. It's one of those things you've got to experience at least once: Brown County, Indiana, during fall. Spring and summer are also pretty amazing, with lush greenery, wildflowers, and waterfalls, and during winter, the whole area becomes something of a wonderland. You'll definitely have to visit more than once to really experience Brown County during each season.
If Helmsburg is a little too rural for you, you can always stay in (and explore) the town of Nashville as well. Or, alternatively, you could spend one night in Helmsburg and one in Nashville – it’s truly up to you. No matter what, Brown County is one of those places that will simply blow you away time and time again. Want some more quick Indiana road trip ideas? Take a look at this article for some inspiration.
