Indiana is a pretty interesting place when you really think about it. This little Midwestern state is underappreciated, in my opinion; there are so many interesting things to do and places to see that it’s kind of hard to know where to begin. We have a suggestion! Hiding in Prairieton, Indiana, is a small lake known as the Blue Hole. It’s a thing shrouded in bizarre rumors, and, as they say, it’s bottomless. This so-called bottomless lake in Indiana is filled with more than just cold, blue water – it’s also full of interesting backstories and urban legends to boot. Sure, there are many beautiful lakes in Indiana worthy of discussion, but there’s only one blue hole.

However, that doesn't mean you can't still check it out! It's highly visible from the road and attracts a lot of attention. It's quite unusual looking, so we can see why - even if people aren't aware of the stories, they can still tell it's something special.
Prairieton is a small town where life is simple and quiet.

As of the 2020 census, it had a population of just 1,205. That population number jumps here and there from time to time, though, as random folks come visit just to see what the fuss about the Blue Hole is about.
The curiosity is understandable; it's not every day you come across a small body of water that's said to be bottomless.

Blue Holes exist in many regions of the world; one of the most famous, perhaps, is the Blue Hole in New Mexico, or maybe the one in Belize, which literally everyone has seen photos of. Those are truly a couple of incredible sights to behold, and the one here in the Hoosier State isn't quite as dramatic... but it's ours.

...and with this mysterious blue hole comes plenty of urban legands and creepy stories.

Legend has it that this is where old Wabash River pirates used to hang out. They say there's treasure buried around here at the bottom of the lake (wait, we thought that wasn't a thing?), and folks have died trying to find it, or so they claim. And still more have died here thanks in part to accidents, recklessness, or simply overestimating their swimming prowess.
It's beautiful, sure, but that murky green-blue water holds a few too many secrets for our liking.

Local legend also says that the area is haunted, having been used as a place to leave dead bodies by local serial killers. Others whisper about a monster in the lake not unlike the famed Loch Ness Monster. Are any of these true? Maybe, maybe not, but one thing is for sure: they're creepy stories, and they add a strange vibe to this otherwise innocent-looking body of water.

The Blue Hole is a strange – but beautiful – blue-hued lake in Prairieton, Indiana. Even though it’s now located on private property (please do not trespass), it’s still very visible from the road, and to this day it attracts a lot of attention. It’s an offbeat attraction in an otherwise small town that doesn’t get the attention – or the credit – it deserves. It’s as beautiful as it is unsettling, and we can’t get enough.
