When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Oh, Indiana: how do I love thee? Let me count the ways… in the form of seven incredible lakes. These little gems are an important part of Indiana’s ecosystems, as well as important parts of our (read: people) recreation and enjoyment. So, just for fun, I’ve put together an awesome scenic road trip in Indiana featuring some of Indiana’s most beloved, pristine lakes. Take this wonderful drive any time you need something fun to do; road trips in Indiana are a favorite pastime for a reason, after all. Without further ado, here are the seven popular lakes I’ve made this trip from:
1. Lake Michigan
Indiana Dunes National Park, Porter, IN 46304, USA
How could I start a whole trip based on Indiana's amazing lakes without starting first and foremost with Lake Michigan? As the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume, this amazing body of water provides endless entertainment and serenity to Hoosiers that seek out its 45 miles of shoreline. Dig your toes in the sand, enjoy the sun, and relax at Indiana's most pristine lake.
Not overly far from Lake Michigan, the next spot on our itinerary, Lake Maxinkuckee is the second largest natural lake in the United States. It's made up of an impressive 1,864 acres. You'll find the town of Culver, Indiana, on its northwest edge. At its deepest, this lake reaches depths of up to (or should I say down to?) 88 feet. Culver Beach is a must-do!
Lake Manitou is a much-beloved destination for boating, fishing, and more. Trout are abundant, and so are water sports and other shenanigans. Every year, there are numerous fun events held on and near the lake, making the town of Rochester a must-do for the warmer months.
Lake Shafer is probably one of the most famous lakes in the whole Midwest. After all, it's home to one of the best amusement parks in the nation, hidden away in the town of Monticello and known as Indiana Beach. Of course, the roller coasters aren't the ONLY reason to visit... but they're a pretty good motivator.
Cecil M. Harden Lake, also known as Raccoon Lake, is a favorite among swimmers by far. This adorable swimming hole in Indiana is a bit more than just a "hole"; it's a whole lot of fun. Okay, I'll show myself out... but not before I rent a boat. Through Labor Day, there's even a cute little beach house. Count me in.
Our second-to-last stop is the sparkling, shimmering Monroe Lake, also commonly known as Lake Monroe (tomato, tomahto). This is the largest inland lake in the state, with fishing and swimming coming in as some of the most popular activities. It spans an impressive five counties, and it's a must-do for Hoosiers and visitors alike.
Patoka Lake might be the final stop, here, but it's by no means a slacker. It's the second-largest reservoir in the state and is home to some truly unique wildlife, such as freshwater jellyfish. At certain times of year, you'll also spot bald eagles and other such awe-inspiring critters. Bust out the kayaks and enjoy!
This wonderful scenic road trip in Indiana is an absolute must-do for anyone planning on having any fun at all this year; no matter what time of year you embark, it’s sure to be fun and rewarding anyway.
