7 Phrases That Will Make You Swear Indianapolis Has Its Own Language

Once a nickname for Indianapolis that was meant as an insult, Naptown has become a term of endearment and one of the city’s widely used nicknames.

For us basketball fans, the Indiana Pacers play at Bank Life, officially known as Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. Formerly called Conseco Fieldhouse, some folks also still refer to it as Conseco.

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you know the large music pavilion in Noblesville as Deer Creek Music Center, and you still call it that, even though it’s gone through a couple of name changes over the past 15 years. Now officially called Klipsch Music Center, you won’t hear anyone over the age of 25 call it that.

Other major cities in the Midwest also use this nickname for the wings and beer chain, Buffalo Wild Wings, but it’s definitely widely used in Indianapolis. There’s no such thing as Buffalo Wild Wings here, but there are plenty of B Dubs locations.

All the "cool kids" spend their weekend nights in Broad Ripple, affectionately known as B-Rip. If you’re under the age of 30, you probably call it that.

Not exactly a term of endearment like Naptown, folks in Indy use this nickname for the suburb of Noblesville. Until recently, Noblesville was pretty much just houses and farmland, which some considered a less-than-exciting place to be, disconnected from the attractions offered in other parts of the city, and felt a bit like travelling to entirely different state. As the suburb has grown, the nickname has lost some of its appropriateness.

Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, may showcase Andrew Luck — or the backup QB of the week — taking the snaps these days, but it will always be the house that the legendary Peyton Manning built, hence it’s nickname: Peyton’s Place.
