The Rathskeller, located in the Mass Ave district of downtown Indianapolis, is the city's oldest restaurant still in operation today. This incredible German restaurant first opened its doors in 1894 and has been serving up impressive cuisine ever since.
The Rathskeller is part of the Athenaeum and used to be called the Athenaeum Restaurant. This German restaurant was built to mirror a Bavarian inn and dining establishment, as well as a Munich beer hall.

One of the building's architects was actually Bernard Vonnegut, the grandfather of the celebrated author and Indianapolis native, Kurt Vonnegut. There's even a room named after Vonnegut, while a brick pays homage to the author.

Once inside the Rathskeller, you'll be able to eat at the bar or one of the many various themed dining rooms. This restaurant also has an event hall and private dining areas for large parties or special events.
The menu selection is huge, as are the portions of food. You'll find an impressive array of appetizers like their cheese and meat plate or sausage and sauerkraut sampler, as well as an amazing selection of craft, German, and local beers.
