Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana is about two hours north of Indianapolis, but is worth the drive if you’re looking for a haunted excursion.

Built in 1908 and expanded in 1928, Lake County Jail was home to 150 cells filled with dangerous criminals, as well as county sheriffs, who were required to live on the premises.
The maximum security prison was, considered to be "escape-proof" until 1934... when gangster John Dillinger refuted that claim when he made his infamous break-out.

After that, the jail never had the same level of reverence, and it was closed down and turned into a historical site in the late 1970s.
