Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana is about two hours north of Indianapolis, but is worth the drive if you’re looking for a haunted excursion.
Built in 1908 and expanded in 1928, Lake County Jail was home to 150 cells filled with dangerous criminals, as well as county sheriffs, who were required to live on the premises.
The maximum security prison was, considered to be "escape-proof" until 1934... when gangster John Dillinger refuted that claim when he made his infamous break-out.
While the prison has never been utilized for its original purposes again, it has gone through extensive renovations over the past two decades, resulting in many first-hand accounts of haunted sightings.
People have claimed to see apparitions in the cells and hallways, as well as doors open and close on their own. Some have even heard footsteps and voices.
