If you live in Indy, you probably already know that you should never judge a book by its cover. Many of our most famous buildings and restaurants don’t look like much from the outside, but are hiding many wonderful things inside. The same can be said about this iconic mom & pop restaurant in Indianapolis that serves some of Indy’s best home-cooked meals.
Kountry Kitchen, just north of downtown Indianapolis is located in a fairly bland building that may even appear to be closed down at first glance.
In fact, it's extremely easy to drive by and miss altogether. Once you step inside of this soul food cafe, you'll realize you've just entered somewhere truly special.
The Kountry Kitchen first opened in 1988 and has been serving up Southern homestyle cooking for over 30 years now.
Originally opened by Ms. Jessie, the restaurant was later run by her daughter Nell, and is now taken care of by Isaac and Cynthia Wilson, who continue on the traditions of Ms. Jessie's original concept: to serve the best home-cooked soul food in the region.

The Kountry Kitchen is Indy's premiere soul food cafe, and it serves up some of the absolute best "from scratch" homestyle cooking in the city.
Served with homemade sides like their legendary creamy mac and cheese, collard greens, pinto beans, and freshly baked cornbread, you'll enjoy a savory feast that you'll be dreaming about for weeks to come.
Their legendary fried chicken wings are one of their most popular food items, with a recipe that's entirely their own and that has remained unchanged throughout the years.
Wash it down with their homemade lemonade for a delightful treat that you won't be able to find anywhere else in Indy. Just keep in mind that most items are a la carte, so be sure to order everything you want up front!
Other popular dishes at this no-frills cafe include fried catfish, ribs, cube steak, hearty breakfasts, and their banana pudding. If you're in a hurry, you can also get your food to go (a popular option, especially on game days).
You'll find this hidden soul food cafe at 1831 N College Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46202.
