There are a lot of cool cities in the Midwest, but only one can hold the title of “Coolest City.” Yeah, maybe we’re a little biased but we think that Indianapolis deserves that title. Here are nine of the reasons why:
1. Indianapolis is currently in a food renaissance. You can’t go more than a few blocks without running into a fantastic restaurant.
There was a time in Indy when it wasn’t considered a "food city." That time is long gone, considering how many amazing restaurants and food trucks you’ll find throughout the city. No matter what neighborhood you’re in, there’s a delicious meal option right around the corner.
2. Our museums offer countless hours of culture and enjoyment.
Head to the Eiteljorg for a look at American Indian and Western art. Check out the world’s largest Children’s Museum. Take in the classic and contemporary art at the IMA. NCAA Hall of Champions, Eli Lilly Civil War Museum, the list of museums to check out goes on and on.
3. Nightlife is way more interesting than non-residents would expect it to be.
Sure, Indy’s not Miami or New York when it comes to nightlife but there’s still a lot of fun things to do at night. For bar hopping, your best bet is Broad Ripple and for some more upscale options plus live music, downtown’s Mass Ave and Fountain Square are the go-to areas.
4. The professional sports scene offers year-round excitement.
There was a time when we were strictly a football and basketball state. Pacers and Colts, that was it. While those are still our teams in the major professional sports leagues, we also have minor league baseball’s Indianapolis Indians as well as minor league hockey’s Indy Fuel. You’ll have ample opportunity to watch live sports throughout the year.
5. We live in a city rich in history.
The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library. The home of James Whitcomb Riley. The residence of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of these United States. Indianapolis has all these and you can learn more about their history on site.
6. Indianapolis has stunning architecture everywhere you look.
The city has so many awe-inspiring buildings and structures. From the Artsgarden to the country’s first Union Station, there’s so much to see if you’re into architecture and design.
7. Beer, beer, and more beer.
It’s crazy how good the craft beer scene has become here. Sun King, Bier, Fountain Square, Four Day Ray, and many more breweries can be found throughout the city. They’re all worth checking out.
8. There’s so much to enjoy in the Great Outdoors.
Over 100 parks, including Fort Harrison and White River State Parks, there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy the beauty of nature.
9. For everything it has to offer, living in Indy is extremely affordable.
Hey, money in your bank account is pretty cool. When you live here, you’ll definitely have more of it than in some other major Midwestern cities. With everything there is to do, from restaurants to bars to music venues, there’s never a dull moment which only increases the city’s value. Living here is a steal.
So, there you have it. Indianapolis is the coolest city in the Midwest. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments below!
