If spooky, heart-pumping thrills are something that you’re looking for, there are plenty of haunted places around Indianapolis that can scratch that itch. While you’re around town, check out these seven places rumoured to be extremely haunted.
1. Hannah House
Legend has it that a group of escaped slaves, cramped in the cellar of the Hannah House waiting to escape for freedom in Canada, were caught in a fire started by a knocked-over oil lamp. Smoke inhalation and burns consumed all of them, leading to their deaths in just a few short minutes. Ever since then, the cellar has been known for its paranormal activity. People have seen spectral forms, heard moans and voices, and felt rushes of cold air where they shouldn't normally be felt. Yet, the Hannah House remains a historic part of Indianapolis, used for weddings, receptions, and events every single day.
2. Indianapolis Athletic Club
When a fire occurred at this popular athletic club back in 1992, a group of firefighters were dispatched to contain and put the fire out. However, it is believe that one fireman succumbed to the effects of the fire, resulting in his death. Ever since, there have been reports of the fireman’s ghost attempting to wake and scare guests in the middle of the night. You see, the athletic club was shut down in 2004 and the building is now home to luxury condominiums.
3. The Slippery Noodle Inn
Indiana’s oldest continually operated bar, the Slippery Noodle Inn remains a popular nighttime social spot dating back to the 1800s. Featuring nightly blues performances and an old-school vibe, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a resident who hasn’t heard of this bar. Because it’s been around for more than 160 years, the building has had its fair share of paranormal sightings. People have reported seeing the ghosts of slaves, cowboys, and caretakers throughout the years.
4. Indiana Repertory Theatre
Known by locals simply as the IRT, the Indiana Repertory Theatre is a professional theatre that has put on shows for the city’s residents for more than 40 years. However, there have been numerous reports of this theatre being haunted. On a blustery, rainy day, a former artistic director was killed while on his daily jog when his nephew hit him with a car at the theatre. Ever since, witnesses have reported that you can hear creaking floorboards in the theatre’s upper mezzanine.
5. James Allison Mansion
Built in the early 20th century, this iconic mansion is a big part of the heritage of Indianapolis. Known for its beautiful craftsmanship and architecture, the mansion is open for tours and exploration from dawn to dusk. However, at night, there have been many reports of haunted activity, including some witnesses hearing voices in the attic or seeing the ghost of a small girl. Others have noticed furniture that was rearranged or objects that appear to move by themselves.
6. Avon Haunted Bridge
Built back in 1906, the Avon Haunted Bridge was a railroad bridge used for transportation throughout the 20th century. Legend has it that, as a mother was walking with her baby on the tracks, she slipped and fell off the bridge, resulting in the death of both mother and child. Avon locals would say that, whenever you drove under the bridge, you had to honk in order to drown out the cries emanating from the mother’s ghost.
7. The Catacombs
Underneath the popular Indianapolis City Market rests nearly 20,000 square feet of underground passageways. Many a ghost hunter has traversed through this underground area, which doesn’t feature any public entrance, but offers tours throughout the year. People have reported multiple paranormal phenomenon while on these guided tours, but nothing menacing or evil. Simply put, this place is spooky, but not frightening.
