Sometimes, it’s nice to enjoy a getaway from city life at a moment’s notice. Of course, that’s tough to do when so many things around Indy require planning and reservations. However, there are still activities you can enjoy that you don’t need to plan in advance… like camping. For a cheap and fun excursion, check out these campgrounds where no reservations are required.
At Hoosier National Forest, there are more than 30 campsites open all year round, rain or shine. You can stay at these sites with no reservation for up to 14 days. Address: 811 Constitution Avenue, Bedford, IN 47421.
One of the many free campsites in Brown County State Park, you can enjoy some primitive camping at this beautiful, scenic location by the water. Address: Freetown, IN 47235.
You’ll find the Ross Campground near West Lafayette. Featuring 29 campsites with amenities including drinking water, restrooms, showers, and electricity, this is one of the few amenity-filled sites that don’t require reservations. You can stay here for up to 10 days at a time. Address: 9225 West 75 South, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
At this campground in Derby, Indiana, you’ll find more than a dozen campsites complete with fire rings/pits and picnic benches. There’s also a 24-mile trail for hiking and biking, as well as a quiet lake. No reservations, but the price is $4 per day via a self-use pay box. Address: 248 15th Street, Tell City, IN 47586.
South of Indy in Paoli, Indiana, you’ll find a 141-acre lake surrounded by forests featuring primitive campsites. This year-round campground is free of charge, but you give up certain amenities like available drinking water. You’ll still find restrooms, though. At Springs Valley, you can stay for up to 14 days at a time. Address: 326 South Larry Bird Boulevard, French Lick, IN 47432.
One of the state’s roadside dispersed campsites, Mitchell Creek offers both tent camping and RV parking free of charge. Reviews state that this is a fun and quiet place to spend a night while also catching glimpses of local wildlife. Address: Johnson Township, IN 47116.
You will have to pay $7 a night to stay here, but it’s self-check-in and first come, first serve. There’s no need for reservations or online booking. At this stunning state forest, you’ll run into ponds, hiking trails, and even mountain bike trails. Campground amenities include restrooms and picnic tables. You can also park your RV here if you would like. Address: 14040 Williams Road, Shoals, IN 47581.
Enjoy some camping at one of the few spots close to home. Off the banks of the White River, you can enjoy this Hamilton County campground complete with 26 acres of trails and water, perfect for hiking, fishing, and even canoeing. Address: 11299 East 234th Street, Cicero, IN 46034.
There’s something relaxing and peaceful about just packing up a bag and your tent and heading to a campsite on a whim. These no-reservation campsites afford you that luxury and we hope you take advantage of them.
