A common misconception about Indianapolis is that it’s a boring place to live. Outsiders may overlook our hidden gems, but people who live here know better. Here are nine reasons why many people will never call anywhere but Indianapolis “home.”
1. There’s nowhere else like Broad Ripple.
If you’re looking for a night out, you’re likely heading to Broad Ripple. Featuring a long stretch of bars, clubs, restaurants, and breweries, you can easily spend an entire weekend in this famous Indianapolis neighborhood.
2. We have amazing parks.
With over 100 parks within city limits, there is no shortage of hiking, biking, fishing, or picnicking opportunities throughout Indy. Top options for a day outside include Eagle Creek Park, White River State Park, and Holliday Park.
3. There is so much to learn at our museums.
Indy features the largest Children’s Museum in the world, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and one of the top art museums in the country. You’ll also find the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, the Eiteljorg, and the State Museum. It’s easy to lose yourself in the beauty of art and history at these various museums.
4. We have a unique history.
Speaking of history, Indianapolis has quite the past. Whether you’re interested in learning more about famous author and Indy resident Kurt Vonnegut at his memorial library, or want to see the residence of 23rd president Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis affords you the ability to do both.
5. The spectacular Monon Trail.
Stretching over 18 miles of Indianapolis, the famous Monon Trail is a bike and walking path that was converted from a historic railroad line. In the spring and summer, you’ll find a multitude of walkers, bikers, and sightseers utilizing this trail. It links over a dozen neighborhoods, making for a unique and safe way to travel throughout the city.
6. No one can touch our love of sports.
If football’s your game, the Indianapolis Colts are here. Basketball? Indiana Pacers as well as the NCAA’s Butler Bulldogs. Baseball? Take in an Indianapolis Indians game. Hockey? We’ve got the ECHL’s Indy Fuel. We’ve even got the Indy Eleven for soccer. If you’re into sports, Indy is the city for you.
7. Our burgeoning foodie scene.
It wasn’t always the case, but currently Indianapolis is one of the preeminent food cities in the country. Just ask Zagat, who named Indy its 15th hottest food city of 2016. If you’re in the mood for a delicious brunch, check out Milktooth. For a steak, the historic St. Elmo Steakhouse is a fantastic option. Cajun food? Yats has multiple locations throughout the city. You’ll never run out of places to find a good meal here.
8. Our welcoming autumn weather.
Spring and summer are great. Winter has its charms, but it’s autumn that really brings out the best and most picturesque version of Indianapolis. As October hits, you’ll notice the beautiful colors of the leaves as well as the flowers and foliage throughout the city.
9. The killer live music scene.
Outsiders might not realize it, but Indy is a wonderful place for live music. With larger venues including the Old National Centre as well as smaller spots like The Rathskeller’s Beer Garden, you won’t have to go far to experience an evening of music.
