Most of us have memories from high school that will last a lifetime. We might think of the halls and classrooms of our high school will last at least as long, but this once-bustling school in Indiana has begun to decay in a stunning way. Thanks to photographer Ken Fager for the incredible shots of this decayed institution.
This abandoned high school is located in Gary, Indiana.
Its classrooms are still overflowing with the untouched remains of lessons gone by.
Old school photos preserve the smiling faces of students who spent years passing though these halls.
The school library still retains an air of orderliness, even if many of the books have begun to rot on the shelves or have been pulled to the floor by vandals.
The town of Gary is actually littered with abandoned high schools.
In fact, over 21 schools have closed in this small town.
In 2015, a 17-year-old girl was found strangled to death in one of these abandoned high schools.
Local residents consider the old schools urban eyesores, but their decaying interiors are hard to look away from.
The trinkets and trophies of past classes are still crammed into display cases. Many are still gleaming.
Even though this school has been shuttered for quite some time, much of it still feels like class has simply let out for the summer.
Even bottle specimens from past science lessons remain.
Some hope that a few of the old schools may reopen in time.
It’s easy to imagine how many proms, school plays and graduation ceremonies this decaying structure must have seen.
There’s nothing like seeing that your old high school has aged along with you. Are there any old, abandoned schools in your community?
