Truthfully, Indiana has a lot of spooks that are haunting certain places around the state year round. There is, however, something about Halloween and the month of October that makes these stories extra fun to tell and to read. I did a little digging and found 10 ghost stories I wanted to share with you. Meet these Indiana ghosts, learn more about their stories, and maybe plan a trip to the grounds they haunt!
1. Meet Thomas Taggart
The French Lick Springs Hotel is believed to be haunted by Thomas Taggart, the former owner of the hotel. His ghost is believed to linger around the service elevator where you can small tobacco. He is said to operate and use the elevator any time the hotel is busy. Some also claim to have seen him riding a horse down the halls and in the ballroom. There are some stories that claim there's also the ghost of a bellhop haunting the hotel as well.
2. Meet the Grey Lady
The Grey Lady is rumored to haunt the Willard Library in Evansville. With her comes other ghosts, the scent of her perfume, strange noises, and random cold spots. The water and electricity is known to turn off and on all by itself in this library. The library hosts ghost tours during the month of October for anyone who wants to hunt for the Grey Lady.
3. Meet the Maid and Possibly the Owner
Hacienda Mexican Restaurant in Mishawaka used to be a private mansion and it's believed to be haunted by the ghost of individuals who lived there. Some stories claim one of the ghosts is the maid of the owner of the mansion who became pregnant with his child. Finding out about the pregnancy, the owner shunned her and she killed herself by hanging herself in the attic of the mansion. Other stories suggest the ghosts are of the owner who killed himself in the basement of the same mansion. Lights, water, and electrical appliances turn off and on by themselves in this restaurant.
4. Meet the Abused Hospital Patients
Back in 1848, the Central State Hospital was the Indiana Hospital for the Insane. The area is believed to be haunted by patients who were abused during their stay at this hospital. Shadows, apparitions, women’s screams, footsteps, unexplained noises, and moans are just a few of the creepy experiences waiting for anyone who decides to go exploring.
5. Meet Studebaker, His Child, and the Nanny
Tippecanoe Place is the name of a restaurant inside of the Studebaker mansion. Employees of the restaurant claim to see things moving out of the corner of their eyes and to witness objects moving by themselves all the time. While no one knows for sure, it's assumed that Studebaker himself along with possibly his child and the nanny are haunting the restaurant.
6. Meet Al Capone
You probably need to get out from under the rock you’ve been living under if you don’t know who Al Capone is. Fortunately, you can head to Barbee Hotel if you want to be haunted by his ghost. He frequented this hotel. He would stay in room 301 and he would clear out the hotel so he could be alone. The staff of the hotel claim you can small cigar smoke coming from the room he used to stay in and you can see a ghost that looks similar to him sitting in the bar.
7. Meet the University of Notre Dame Ghost George Gipp
George Gipp, a legendary Notre Dame footballer, is rumored to haunt the Washington Hall of the University of Notre Dame ever since he passed away from strep throat back in December of 1920. His ghost manifests as creepy sounds in the night.
8. Meet the Lerner Theatre’s Tech Director
The Lerner Theatre in Elkhart is believed to be haunted by a tech director who died when he had a heart attack while on the job. Witnesses claim that you can see lights flickering along with hearing strange noises coming from the attic. Some say you can even see the ghost of the director when you take a virtual tour of the theater.
9. Meet Nameless Ghostly Children
Potato Creek State Park is, sadly, believed to be haunted by the ghost of children who drowned in the park over the years while fishing and swimming. The sound of children crying and calling out to their mothers can be heard echoing in the park even when there are no children around.
10. Meet Nathan Hinkle
Urban legend has it that if you head to Bethel Cemetery in Hymera, visit Nathan Hinkle, a Revolutionary War soldier’s grave, walk around it, and say his name three times, his ghost will appear and speak to you. Spooky!
