If the name Lyles Station doesn't ring a bell, don't worry. This amazing community has remained quite the secret in Indiana. Over 200 years ago, Lyles Station was home to a free community of African American farmers. Communities like these were quite seldom and Lyles Station might actually be the last one standing in the Midwest.

It's incredible to witness this town in person and learn more about the freed slaves who created a self-sufficient community for themselves. In honor of this and similar communities, the Smithsonian opened a special exhibit on display in Washington D.C.

Lyles Station was founded by the freed slave, Joshua Lyles, who became quite a successful farmer by the mid-1800s. Visitors can learn more by visiting the former Consolidated School in Lyles Station, which now functions as a museum.
