Who is this lady in grey? Some speculate the ghost is that of the founder’s daughter, Louise Carpenter. Stories claim Louise was bitter when most of her father’s estate was gifted to the library. After losing a court case, they claim she harbored an intense grudge, one that lasted beyond death.

Others disagree, claiming the ghost is not vindictive or angry. Many of these believers are library staff members who see The Lady in Grey as another member of the library staff, though they are not sure of her original identity.

Whoever The Lady in Grey is and whatever she wants, she certainly has found a home within the Willard Library. Observers and staff members claim to see her rather often, sometimes accompanied by the strong scent of a musky smelling perfume. Others claim this ghost turns faucets on and off, rearranges books, and plays with the light switches.
