Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Located in gorgeous Posey County, Indiana, is one of our 24 awesome designated state parks that often – and for some reason – flies under the radar. This little piece of paradise is so typically overlooked that even we’ve never given it its own feature (though we have mentioned it in lists that feature a lesser-known state park in Indiana, which really only kinda proves my point), so it’s about time we take a hot moment to appreciate it. Go check out Harmonie State Park, tucked safely away inside the beautiful small Indiana town of New Harmony.
Well-hidden in the lowest of lower southwest Indiana is this gorgeous little state park that, for whatever reason, only sees about 130,000 visitors a year.
Compare this to other parks in Indiana, like, say, Indiana Dunes National Park (2.83 million), and other parks in the United States like, say, the Grand Canyon (5.9 million). It's just.. not much.
But do you know what this means, though? Yep - that's right - peace and quiet.
Show up early during the middle of the week and you might even have the park to yourself. It's the perfect summer destination! Forget the crowded places like Indiana Beach and opt instead for a lovely day spent at Harmonie.

Once upon a time, the entire goal of the town of New Harmony was to be a utopia.
Obviously, humans are how humans are, and a utopia was not possible - but this little state gem is the closest we'll probably get to a little utopian paradise right here in the Midwest.
You could easily turn this into a day trip (or longer - there's a campground too!) just meandering around and exploring all of the beauty the trails have to offer. Just be aware of your surroundings and yield to horses and bikes!
And while you're in New Harmonie, you should also check out the stunningly beautiful New Harmony Labyrinth, which is typically an intense green during the summer months.
Do you have a favorite misfit – a favorite lesser-known state park in Indiana? Let me know about it in the comments – I might just write about it sometime. And while you’re at it, let me know your favorite state park in general, too.
