Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
So, quick pro-tip: the best way to find out what restaurants are really the best ones is simple. You don’t necessarily need to read reviews, or talk to friends – nope, just look for the places that sell out by the end of the day. You’ll find that there are plenty of joints that tend to do this, and it’s one of those that I’m going to gush about today. For some of the best soul food you’ve ever had in your life, head up to Fort Wayne and check out Big Momma’s Kitchen. It not only has some of the best brisket in Indiana – it’s also got the best everything else. When it comes to delicious comfort food in Indiana, Big Momma’s should be your very first stop – but show up early. They do sell out.
Fort Wayne is a delightful city with plenty to do, but today, we're going to have the best brisket in the universe.
Okay, okay - maybe that's subjective, but seriously: the brisket (and all the brisket-adjacent dishes like the brisket nachos) is to die for, the mac and cheese is absolutely killer, the chicken is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the ribs... oh, boy, the ribs.
Big Momma's Kitchen is a simple, homey place where all this and more is served with a smile and, as its own Facebook page says, with good manners.
There's nothing you can order that isn't amazing, but like I mentioned before: get here early. Big Momma's tends to sell out of many things by the end of the day, with the ribs and brisket being two of the most beloved items.
I can't think of a whole lot of killer culinary combinations like secret sauce recipes, community service and care, and tender, juicy meat so good you'll come back for the next meal, too. And maybe the one after. It's a perfect 10.
With sauce. Without sauce. Sauce on the side. It doesn't matter.
All that matters is that you're here, at Big Momma's... and you order to your heart's content.
Big Momma’s Kitchen is still a pretty mom-and-pop little place, so be sure to check out its official website – and be sure to check out the official Facebook page for the latest news, specials, hours, and more.
