Nestled in southern Indiana is the Hoosier State’s oldest state forest. It was officially established in 1903 when it was realized that local woodworking facilities could run out of wood relatively quickly thanks to over-foresting; originally, it spanned just 2,028 acres. Today, it spans nearly 24,000 amazing acres, and guess what? It’s free to access, and it’s filled to the brim with amazing things to do, see, experience, and fall in love with. Come see why the Clark State Forest is home to some of the best hikes in Indiana, as well as some of the most breathtaking scenery. Check it out!
Clark State Forest is easily one of southern Indiana's crown jewels.
It's beautiful and unusual, filled with intriguing hiking trails and, better yet, one of the hands-down best hikes in Indiana: the Knobstone Trail.
The Knobstone Trail is nothing to shake a stick at; it's lengthy, challenging, and absolutely beautiful, perfectly encompassing the raw beauty of Clark State Forest.
The trails here - especially the Knobstone - lead to spots you might never expect to find in Indiana, including an incredible vantage point overlooking the woods that feels like something out of a movie.

Should you be of the equestrian sort, there are more than 100 miles of horseback riding trails weaving all over the forest.
The forest is also an excellent source of wildlife watching and intrigue; if you're patient enough, you'll find all sorts of species calling these woods home, from foxes to turkeys and everything in between.
Pack lots of water - especially if you plan on trying to conquer the Knobstone Trail during the summer months - and make sure to take frequent breaks along the way. Exploring the Clark State Forest is wonderful for just a day or, of course, for a multi-day adventure.
One thing is absolutely certain: few places are as underappreciated - or as stunningly beautiful - as Clark State Forest in Indiana.
This amazing Hoosier State hike is easily one of the best hikes in Indiana, but of course, there are literally hundreds of others to choose from, too. Clark State Forest is an Indiana nature lover’s dream come true, and we are so proud to call it our own!
