What are the best places for camping in Indiana?
The camping in Indiana is in a league of its own, and you'd be hard-pressed to find better campsites than these following spots:
- Hardin Ridge Recreation Area. The Hardin Ridge Recreation Area is a gorgeous, relaxing camping getaway that feels far away without actually BEING far away. It's 1,200 acres of gorgeous woodlands, forest, and even a pristine lake with a swimming beach!
- Dunewood Campground, Indiana Dunes National Park. A perennial Hoosier State Favorite, Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park has it all! Indiana's amazing first National Park is a sight to behold, and what better way to behold it than by camping overnight and exploring by day? One of our favorite places to go camping in Indiana is here, too; Dunewood Campground is comprised of 66 campsites along two loops, both of which have clean restrooms and hot showers. You'll feel like you're roughing it in the middle of nowhere, but really you're just in the middle of one of the most beautiful places in Indiana.
- Lake Waveland Park. Lake Waveland is a 600-acre escape from reality that has all the fun and social aspects of a traditional campground combined with the natural beauty of the Hoosier State. This is definitely one of the most fun places to go camping in Indiana, especially if you look forward to a more "community" kind of feel.
- Hidden Paradise. Paradise found... in Indiana! This popular campground in Indiana is built around Hidden Paradise Quarry, a beautiful (former) rock quarry with aquamarine waters and a pleasantly chilly temp even during the hottest months. This campground is a delight, and the perfect way to escape from the city into nature.
- Hidden Creek. This 95-acre, family-friendly campground in Indiana is, like others on this list, situated around water. There's a gorgeous, crisp creek running through the campground, two ponds onsite that are great for fishing, lots of gorgeous trails for wandering, and all sorts of other magical amenities.
- Lake Shafer. This lovely body of water is located in Monticello, Indiana, and it's one of two reservoirs in the area. Lake Shafer is probably best known for Indiana Beach Amusement Park, which sits right on top of it! Also alongside the lake, though, is an epic campground that one could essentially call an "outdoor resort"; it's got hundreds of campsites - primitive and modern - and more amenities than you could ever imagine.
